The online video impact has caused a lot of changes, and is one of the factors that influenced Microsoft in creating their own content delivery network, the “Edge Computing Network.” (ECN) An article by Janko Roettgers on NewTeeVee.com says that Microsoft’s bandwidth has been growing from 30-100 percent annually, and a large portion of that growth is from online video. The amount of video data in relation to Microsoft’s total data delivery has grown from 10% in 2007 to an expected 55% in 2010.

According to comScore, nearly 139 million U.S. Internet users watched a total of 11.5 billion online videos during any given month last year. However, the average YouTube video receives only 100 views a year. This makes optimizing video for YouTube one of the biggest opportunities in the fast-changing and complex world of search. Video Search Engine Optimization (VSEO) has become the most important new use of search engine optimization today.

In May of 2007 Google unveiled Universal Search, which put succinctly is the aggregation of all the information that Google indexes, (Web, Images, News, Maps, and Video) returned in a more media rich result. This means that when consumers are searching for a particular vehicle, they may see a map of the closest dealership, an image associated with the car, or even a video that extols the benefits of a particular vehicle or a customer testimonial about your dealership and the great experience they had buying from you. What is the value of being on the first page of Google? What is the value of having multiple listings on the first page of the search engines? With the launch of Universal Search it has become very important for your videos to be not only on YouTube but on as many of the other video search sites that now populate the web.
