Blogs Are Still On the Rise

With all the blame the national media has bestowed upon the world of blogging for diluting journalism, there is no indication that the world is actually listening.

It is apparent that blogging is stronger than ever. Based on a recent survey of over 2,900 bloggers by the blogging search engine giant, Technorati, many people have turned to exploding microblogging services like Twitter to check on the state of affairs. The list of people who are participating in this phenomenon include national news anchors who publicly use their own microblogging sites as a second platform for their personal opinion about the state of affairs. The saying rings clear in this case, “if you can’t beat em, join em!”

The rise of Twitter can be directly related to the strong growth of blogging. Due to the fact that to use twitter you have talk about any issue that people can relate to, what better place to hear about breaking news than online with blogs?

Technorati CEO Richard Jalichandra says the “State of the Blogosphere is strong. Blogs are media,” Some have suggested that Twitter is hurting blogs. “These findings prove that wrong.” He stated, “All bloggers’ number one use of Twitter is to promote their blogs.”

Here is a quick overview of statistics from Technorati’s 2009 State of the Blogosphere report that describe the Characteristics of many bloggers.

- 72% blog for hobby/fun and don’t make money
- 28% are professional bloggers
- 2/3 of professional bloggers are male
- 60% are 18-44
- 40% of professional bloggers have at some point in their life worked for traditional media
- 7% are actually still employed in traditional media
- 73% of bloggers use Twitter vs 14% of general population

One of the most notable results from the survey claims, 63% of bloggers in general say that they have become more involved with what they are passionate about as a result of blogs.
